Overview

Peelaway 1 is a water-based paint and varnish remover ideal for restoration projects involving multiple layers of paint. It will safely remove old toxic lead and oil-based paints from ornate plaster ceilings and cornices, bricks, masonry, steel, cast iron and woodwork. The alkaline formulation quickly reacts with paint resins and converts any lead present into a compound that can be safely disposed of without endangering the environment. One application removes multiple coats of most paints and varnishes.

  • Ideal for older lead based paints
  • Highly effective paint and varnish stripper

Sold as a complete kit:

Preparation

Ensure the area to be treated is clean and free from dust, debris, and other contaminants to ensure good adhesion.

  • Cover any surrounding surfaces with a polythene sheet and masking tape.
  • Do not sand / remove flakes of paint if suspected to contain lead.
  • Always wear suitable protective clothing.
  • Always apply a before using this product, Test patches should be completed before undertaking any paint removal project.
  • Mask off a small area and apply the paste at different thicknesses its recommended to do test strips at 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm.
  • Allow to stand from 2 to 48 hours, leave longer for heavy build up over moldings (up to 72 hours).
  • To remove, the spatula should be inserted into the paste and a section gently lifted away. If the original surface is apparent, the test patch can be removed and the surface wiped with a damp sponge. If the paint can still be seen, the test patch should be replaced and re-examined after a few hours.
  • Continue testing until the original surface is no longer apparent to establish correct paste thickness, timing, and the designated paste to be applied.

Application

Looking for the spatula? You will find it inside the tub!

Before applying the product test a small area on the surface to be treated to ensure you are happy with your results. It is often impossible to know the type of paint or surface before the coating is removed, therefore it is essential that a test area be completed typically of the surface to be stripped to help ensure that the results will be satisfactory.

  • When working indoors allow adequate cross ventilation at all times.
  • Only apply to an area size that is manageable and that can be stripped within the timescale indicated by the Test Patch
  • External use may be affected by extremes of weather conditions and additional monitoring or protection may be required. Tape down blanket edges to protect from high traffic or the possibility of rain/wind.
Uneven Surfaces
  • On uneven surfaces apply thickly (1mm to 6mm e.g. 1mm when removing varnish) using a brush or the spatular provided work into crevises and moldings.
  • Apply a second coat where appropriate to ensure correct thickness has been achieved.
  • Apply the poultice blanket with the printed side facing out, rubbing gently to ensure it adheres to the paste, pierce any air bubbles.
  • Allow to work for between 1 and 48 hours depending on paint type, thickness, and temperature. Build up over plaster moldings may need longer (up to 72 hours).
Flat Surfaces
  • Apply thickly (1mm to 6mm e.g. 1mm when removing varnish) with a brush, spatula, hawk and trowel, or industrial sprayer to required thickness.
  • Apply the poultice blanket with the printed side facing out, rubbing gently to ensure it adheres to the paste, pierce any air bubbles.
  • Allow to work for between 1 and 48 hours depending on paint type, thickness, and temperature.
Removal
  • Always ensure to cover adjacent surfaces such as flooring and plants with a polyethylene sheet.
  • Slide spatula into paste/paint and surface interface, keeping the paint, paste and blanket together as much as possible.
Interior Clean Up
  • Using a spray bottle, or bucket and sponge, rinse the surface with clean water.
  • If necessary use a nylon brush to loosen the remaining residue.
Exterior Clean Up
  • Use a garden hose or power washer to rinse the residue off the surface (if the substrate is suitable) If the substrate is delicate/porous use a bucket and sponge to rinse, power washing or water saturation may damage the surface.
  • If necessary use a nylon brush to loosen the remaining residue.

Extra can be purchased separately if a larger area needs to be covered

Aftercare & Storage

Neutralising

The alkaline solution must be neutralised on porous surfaces such as wood, plaster, and stone with the dilute acetic acid provided. After the surface has fully dried any residue should be vacuumed or brushed off. The acetic acid neutraliser should then be lightly sprayed onto the surface and allowed to dry thoroughly.

If a white powder appears on the surface, simply brush and reapply the neutraliser. If the white powder does not appear in 48 hours the surface should be ready for re-coaing.

During very damp periods/conditions such as autumn through to spring, particularly on exterior substrates, moisture containing residues of Peelaway® 1 may bleed out of the substrate at a later date thus raising the alkaline pH value once again. This could affect the appearance of the repainted surface or cause paint failure. As a precaution, if Peelaway® 1 is used and the surface is to be repainted, we would always recommend using a good quality alkaline-resistant acrylic sealer/primer prior to repainting.

If you require more this can be purchased seperatley.
